ABOUT SIGMA
Founded in 1958, the Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America (SIGMA) has become a fixture in the motor fuel marketing industry. After forty-nine years of leadership, SIGMA is still the national trade association representing the most successful, progressive, and innovative independent marketers and chain retailers in the United States. From the outset, the association has served to further the interests of this independent segment of the industry while providing information and services to members.
SIGMA's 240 corporate members command some 31 percent of the petroleum retail market, selling nearly 60 billion gallons of motor fuel a year. These member companies operate throughout the United States and in Canada.
VISION: To be a forum of such value that the best, brightest and most dedicated people in the transportation fuels industry will be drawn to assemble here.
MISSION: To benefit our members by helping them improve their ability to succeed in a free and fully competitive market for transportation fuels.
VALUES: Independence, Innovation, Integrity, Leadership
We accomplish these goals in service to our membership through informative, award-winning publications, strategic lobbying, legislative reporting and legal interpretations, industry research, political action initiatives, and educational opportunities offered in formal programs and informal networking sessions at our well-regarded conventions and conferences.
SIGMA Membership Categories:
SIGMA membership is divided into three basic categories depending on the type of business.
1. Regular membership companies involved in motor fuel retailing or wholesaling which are not owned by a refinery. They are primarily chain retailers representing over 35,000 gasoline outlets in the United States. As a group they sell more than 31 percent of all motor fuel sold in the U.S.
2. Associate Fuel Supplier membership companies directly related to the manufacture or sale of motor fuels (refiners, additives, lubes, brokers, traders, terminal operators, etc.)
3. Associate membership companies which offer financial services, fleet card services, or provide fuel transport services.
Suppliers of products, equipment, and/or services that do not fit into the above categories are classified as “Non-Fuel Suppliers.” SIGMA does not require dues from companies that are classified as non-fuel suppliers. These companies participation in SIGMA is highly valued and their marketing efforts are looked upon as a sign of support for the organization.
